US to Provide Abrams Tanks to Ukraine while Poland and Germany Sending Leopard 2 Tanks – No Decisions from Canada

Exercise Maple Resolve 21

The U.S. has confirmed it will send 31 Abrams tanks to Ukraine, reversing course after Germany cleared the way for Europe to send tanks.

Defence experts have claimed this could be a turning point in the Ukraine war, and will strengthen Kyiv’s defence against the Russian invasion.

U.S. officials said the 31 Abrams tanks will come at the end of a monthlong contracting process. The package will also include M88 recovery vehicles.

Poland has formally asked Germany for permission to transfer its Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, the Polish defense minister, Mariusz Blaszczak, said on Tuesday, and his German counterpart said Berlin would decide soon on whether it would send its own tanks.

“We are preparing our decision, which will come very soon,” the German official, Boris Pistorius, said, speaking at a news conference with Jens Stoltenberg, secretary general of NATO. “We are looking into the matter, what the current status is regarding our Leopard tanks. It is not just a matter of counting our tanks — we know how many we have — it’s a lot more complicated than that.”

Prime Minister Trudeau says that Canada is contemplating sending Leopard 2 Tanks to Ukraine however, no decision has been made as of yet.

Canada acquired Leopard 2 tanks in 2007 and continues to operate them today. The Leopard 2 weighs 62.3 tonnes and is powered by a 1,500-horsepower diesel engine with an automatic transmission. Like the Leopard 1, its engine can be changed in a short time, anywhere from 15 to 35 minutes. It has a road range of about 450 to 550 km and a top speed of around 72 km/h.

In 2009, Canada acquired 80 Leopard 2A4 and 20 A6 tanks from the Netherlands.

In late 2017, Canada received the first of 18 Leopard 2 AEVs to replace Leopard 1 Badger AEVs.
