5 Things You Should Know about the NATO Response Force (NRF)

What is the NATO Response Force? The NRF is NATO’s designated force in readiness, on standby 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to respond to whatever crisis might face the Alliance. Allies contribute forces to the NRF, which can respond on land, in the air or at sea. In 2014, following Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea, NATO bolstered the NRF with a spearhead unit, formally known as the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force, or VJTF. The leadership of the VJTF rotates annually between Allies.

Message from the Chief of the Defence Staff

What is the deal with Canada's Polar Icebreaker ?

In June 2019, Justin Trudeau announced that Seaspan Shipyard in Vancouver faced major challenges which would be further compounded by awarding them with further work. So instead, the government withdrew from their original, non-binding intention to build the Polar Icebreaker at Seaspan and instead filled up their order book with $14.3B of new contracts for 16 smaller vessels. Then, later that year, the government of Canada held a competitive process which resulted in the selection of Davie as Canada’s Centre of Excellence for the construction of Canada’s polar and heavy icebreakers.

Local Impact of Canada's National Shipbuilding Strategy

In 2019, exactly five months and two days after the delivery of her sister ship, the CCGS Sir John Franklin, Seaspan Shipyards and its 2,700+ employees and over 600 suppliers delivered a second, state-of-the-art Offshore Fisheries Science Vessel, the CCGS Capt. Jacques Cartier to the Canadian Coast Guard. This video showcases the local impact the National Shipbuilding Strategy is already making for businesses and citizens across Canada.

How are NATO and Allies responding to COVID-19?

NATO and Allies face a grave challenge in COVID-19 and Allies continue to help each other with medical supplies, airlifting critical patients and providing other vital support.

NATO Secretary General responds to COVID-19 outbreak

NATO, together with other international organisations, is closely monitoring the COVID-19 outbreak and all NATO Allies have taken measures to respond. NATO has been implementing robust measures to limit the spread of the virus; to reduce the risks to our soldiers, civilians, and communities; and to ensure that our essential work continues – to maintain deterrence and defence for our nations. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg addressed media on March 19, saying: “NATO’s ability to conduct operations has not been undermined. Our forces remain ready, and our work goes on.” He added: “This is an unprecedented crisis. But we have overcome crises before. And together, we will overcome the coronavirus crisis.”
