Russia Orders Troops Into Ukraine – Canada Sends Additional Troops to Latvia as part of Op REASSURANCE

Aid to the Ukraine

On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops into two breakaway regions of Ukraine, Donetsk and Luhansk, after recognizing them as independent states.

President Joe Biden declared Tuesday that Russia’s latest moves amounted to “the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” announced new sanctions and said he would send additional U.S. troops to the region.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau followed suit and unveiled Canada’s “first round” of economic sanctions against Russia. Trudeau said the government is banning all financial dealings with the so-called “independent states” of Donetsk and Luhansk. The penalties mirror the overall allied effort and are intended to help cripple Russia’s economic and political capacity to make war. Among other things, the sanctions bar Canadians from having any financial dealings with the breakaway regions.

Trudeau said that the sanctions “… will remain in place until the territorial integrity of Ukraine is restored.”

The Canadian government also approved the deployment of up to 460 Canadian Armed Forces troops to Latvia as part of Operation REASSURANCE to underpin Canada’s commitment to NATO.

The move comes weeks after Canada ordered its military trainers out of Ukraine and moved its embassy to Lviv, which is considered a safer location than the capital Kyiv.

“We’re doing this to reinforce our commitment to NATO and promote peace and security in Europe,” Trudeau said.

Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said Putin’s actions are a “clear violation” of previous international agreements, the “UN Charter and the world order that has protected global security for decades.”

“We are at the most dangerous moment for world stability in a generation,” she said.
