Canada's Leading Defence Magazine

CDR Names Marc Parent of CAE, Canada’s Defence Executive of the Year

CDR sent European Bureau Chief, Tim Mahon, to CAE headquarters in Montreal to interview this executive who has led his company to a world leading position in the field of training & simulation. Here is that in-depth profile.

A decade ago, a journalist – relatively new to interviewing senior industrialists – sat across a table from the then relatively newly-appointed President and CEO of CAE, Marc Parent. An interview scheduled for 45 minutes ran over three hours and the resulting article became CDR’s first ever Defence Executive of the Year profile. Bringing a different type of examination into the pages of the magazine, the Marc Parent interview set the scene for some fascinating articles as a result of speaking with other distinguished Canadian industrialists over the subsequent period.

It is entirely appropriate, however, that Marc becomes the first ever double recipient of CDR’s recognition: what has happened in CDR reflects, in microcosm, the progress our industry has made in the last decade. What has happened with Marc Parent reflects the way in which leaders develop and lead.

The headline for that February, 2011 article was, “I guess I wound up in the right place,” a quote drawn directly from the interviewee that beautifully encapsulated the spirit of the man. Responding to the obvious question, whether he felt the same ten years on, Marc offered an enthusiastic, “Yes – absolutely. I have the same mindset, the same passion for the business and even more excitement. It is not a chore – getting out of bed is easy.”
