The U.S. Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) is calling for breakthrough commercial solutions that can deliver high‑resolution, space‑to‑space imagery of satellites in geosynchronous orbit (GEO). If your team thrives on complex challenges and next‑generation capability development, this is the kind of program built for you.
The initiative, GHOST RECON (Geosynchronous High‑Resolution Optical Space‑Based Tactical Reconnaissance),aims to accelerate space domain awareness with bold new commercial innovation.

What DIU Wants to Achieve
This program is designed for companies ready to move fast, build ambitiously, and deliver meaningful capability within a short development cycle. Key objectives include:
- A working MVP within 24 months:
Deliver a high‑resolution electro‑optical image of a GEO resident space object from a commercial spacecraft. - Full operational transition within 36 months:
Move the system from commercially owned/operated to government owned/operated. - Sustained mission cadence within 48 months:
Demonstrate weekly drive‑by or inclined‑track missions during the first year of government operations.
If your organization innovates in spacecraft platforms, imaging systems, flight dynamics, robotics, AI‑enabled sensing, or on‑orbit operations, this is a powerful stage to showcase your capabilities.
